Nursery Know-How: The Ultimate Crepe Myrtle Care Guide

Crepe Myrtles: The Crown Jewels of the Southern Garden 🌸

If there’s one plant that defines a beautiful summer landscape, it’s the Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia). Known for their explosion of “crinkled” blooms and their incredible ability to stand up to the toughest Texas heat, these trees are a must-have for any local garden. Whether you are looking for a massive shade tree or a small burst of color for a patio pot, there is a variety that fits your needs.

Why We Love Them

Crepe Myrtles are the overachievers of the plant world. Not only do they bloom for months when other plants are wilting, but they also offer year-round interest. Once the summer flowers fade, you’re treated to vibrant foliage in the fall and stunning, smooth, exfoliating bark in the winter.

Quick Care Cheat Sheet

  • Sun, Sun, Sun: These are sun-worshippers! To get the biggest, brightest blooms, plant them where they’ll get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
  • Watering Wisely: Once established (after about one growing season), they are remarkably drought-tolerant. During extreme heat waves, a deep soak once a week is plenty to keep them happy.
  • Space to Breathe: Crepe Myrtles love airflow. Avoid planting them too close to walls or other thick shrubs to prevent powdery mildew.

A Note on “Crepe Murder” 🚫

We’ve all seen it—trees chopped off straight across the top in the winter. While it’s a common sight, “topping” your trees can actually weaken the wood and ruin the tree’s natural grace. For the best results, only prune away the small “suckers” at the base or thin out crossing branches to let the tree’s natural shape shine!
